What languages are spoken in Sabah?
English is commonly spoken in Malaysia, along with Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. All lessons will be taught in English.
Is Malaysia safe?
Kota Kinabalu stands out as one of the safest and most welcoming cities in Malaysia, known for its low crime rates, friendly community, and strong security infrastructure. As the capital of Sabah, it offers a peaceful environment where residents and visitors can enjoy its vibrant culture, stunning coastal scenery, and modern amenities with a strong sense of safety and ease.
What is the climate like?
Sabah has a tropical rainforest climate characterized by warm temperatures (25-32°C / 77-90°F) and high humidity year-round. The state experiences two monsoon seasons: the Northeast Monsoon (Nov-March) brings heavier rains, while the Southwest Monsoon (May-Sept) is drier. Coastal areas are humid, while the highlands, like Kundasang, are cooler.
How is money handled?
Sabah uses the Malaysian Ringgit (MYR, RM) as its official currency. Banking and currency exchange services are widely available through major banks and ATMs. Foreign exchange services are also accessible at airports, banks, and licensed money changers. VISA and MASTER cards are commonly accepted, but American Express is not. Exchange rates fluctuate regularly, so check current rates before any currency conversions.
How do I get to Sabah?
Travelers can reach Sabah (BKI - Kota Kinabalu International Airport) via connections through major transit hubs in Asia and the Middle East, including Singapore (SIN) or Hong Kong (HKG).
How will I get around Sabah?
Grab, a leading ride-hailing and delivery service like Uber, offers a convenient and reliable transportation option for both residents and visitors. Users can easily book rides through the Grab app, ensuring safe and efficient travel within the city. Holders of valid driving licenses in English may also drive in Malaysia if desired.
Is food provided? What is it like?
A cafeteria is located onsite at the A-Level education center. Gap year participants are responsible for their own dinners, but will be supported in obtaining groceries and food off-campus. Malaysia shares a rich food heritage featuring many familiar elements of Chinese, Indian, and Western cuisines.
